The trees are up at Lanthier Winery. The staff are complaining about glitter boogers and everyone is buying Rudolph Red.  It’s that time of year when all the staff look as if they’ve been working the strip bars in nearby Cincinnati or Louisville. The trees are magnificent and tens of thousands come every year to small town Madison Indiana to visit the Annual Festival of Trees.  Aside from the shimmer forest of Christmas Trees and “glitterfied” staff, guests get to see a...

Everyone knows all about Lanthier Winery’s holiday wines. Our most famous is Rudolph Red. Guests enjoy it chilled or warm with a bit of mulling spice. It tastes just like Christmas. But there are other wines that make great options for holiday parties. You can serve them for sipping or follow one of our easy recipes for quick and easy holiday celebration cocktails and punches.

A long, long  time ago I was born to a mother who loved Christmas trees, Christmas ornaments, Christmas wrapping paper, Christmas bows and all things December 25th-ish.  When Chris and I first opened the winery in 1994 my mom was right there wondering what we would do for Christmas; she decided we needed to set up “a bunch of Christmas trees” and “decorate them fancy.” So the Madison Indiana Annual Festival of Trees was born the day after Thanksgiving 1994.  The event tu...

“OMG"

That’s the first thing that comes to my mind when you ask “what’s it like behind the counter the first weekend Rudolph Red is available.” Both staff and our customers wait in anticipation for those Christmas/Holiday wines. But I say it produces a mad house. Everyone is great and considerate for standing room only! The Christmas trees are unbelievable as well. After allowing our patrons to see the beautiful tress, then I ask, “Can I help you?” I already know the res...

For many of us, the changing seasons come with changing preferences in wine. The crisp whites we crave in summer give way to heartier reds in fall and winter months. As usual, personal preference trumps everything else.

Full-bodied red wines are king in winter since they pair well with heartier dishes, but sparkling wines have a starring role at the holidays too. Our own Cranberry Grande is softly sweet to the palette with a tart cranberry finish. It is a perfect match t...

So the General Election is always on the first Tuesday in November, the poles open at 6AM and close at 6PM.  This is the Election that most people come out for because you don’t have to declare a party, you just go in and vote for the people you want.  Some voters still go in and vote straight ticket wither it be Democrat or Republican but I think in small town government they pick and choose from both parties because they are either friends or family members.  The Gener...

Fall has always been my ideal time of year. The warm colors, the cooler temperatures along with my favorite holiday, Halloween, are all near and dear to my heart. The fascination with scary movies stems back to childhood. The screams, your heart pounding and the allure of the unknown hold a strong appeal for this writer.

The original movie “Halloween” with Jamie Lee Curtis is probably my all-time favorite and “The Wolfman” with Anthony Hopkins coming in second.  Both of t...

It all started when I opened my mouth and suggested that we put lighted garland on the fence behind the bottle wall. Now I have complete control over the light extravaganza in Lanthier Winery’s garden. Now, I cannot pass a Christmas light display without meticulously evaluating its design. My family saw what I had done this past year and my mom said, “I now see why you do not want anything to do with setting up decorations at my house!”

The positive outcome of all the hou...

I’m writing this blog on May 9, 2019 because by the time I’m ready to plant this year’s tulip order I won’t have time to explain it all. That or I could have blacked out most of the scary details.  The truth is the 2019 tulip order began in April when I had to take pictures of all the tulips as they bloomed and make notes about which tulips did well and which didn’t.  I also have to gather a detailed record of my own mistakes.  I never know why I do i t- but I do it eve...
